Therapeutic Recreation Club (TRC)

Fall programs will be stopped as of Tuesday November 19th until further notice.

The Therapeutic Recreation Club (TRC) is a community based recreation program offered by the City of Springfield Department of Parks, Buildings and Recreation Management.

TRC is designed for people with disabilities ages 18 and over  to come together to enjoy common interests, have fun and meet new people through planned and structured activities. Our goal is to promote independence, increase physical activity, and improve one’s socialization skills.

TRC programs and events are offered on a seasonal basis: Fall (Oct-Dec), Winter (Jan-Mar), Spring (Apr -May) and Summer (Aug – Sept). There are no activities in June or July. Registration is required and participants are to complete a participant information form.

Participant Information

TRC is always accepting new participants. All participants must fill out a detailed information form which can be found below. Participants must be at least 18 years of age, semi-independent and continent. Once this form is received and reviewed, participants will be able to begin to register for activities. For a list of the current activities, please see the calendar below and/or click on the schedule. New schedules are sent our one month prior to the new season. If you wish to be added to the email or mailing list, please let us know.

TRC programs and events are staffed by city employees. The ratio is about 1:5 staff to participants however a 1:1 assistance can be provided if needed.

Plan to dress accordingly for each event.  Participants should bring spending money if they want to purchase souvenirs or snacks if they are not included. We are not responsible for lost or stolen money or items that the participant may bring.

Registration & Cancellation

Programs are registration based, therefore if we do not have enough participants registered, activities will be cancelled and your account will be credited. Participants will be called due to a cancellation (weather, low participation, staffing, etc.) or you can call the office line where there will be a recording at 413-787-7779. If schools get cancelled due to winter weather, our activities will also be cancelled.

To register for activities, you may call, email or mail in forms. The contact information is provided below. We accept cash, checks and money orders which should be made payable to: City of Springfield/TRC. There will be a fee for a check that bounces.

Payments & Refunds

Program registration payments are due by the due date listed on the schedule. If there is a balance on your account that has not been discussed and resolved; you will not be eligible to participate.

There are no refunds for ticketed or pre-paid events. These activities are marked with an asterisk next to them. For all other activities, an advanced call to notify us of a cancellation is required in order to receive full or partial refund. These may be on a case by case basis.

Staff is not equipped to administer medications; therefore participants must be able to administer their own medication. It must be in its original bottle with the original label that includes the participant’s name. He/she is responsible for their medications; however, staff should be informed and notified of this information.

Behavior Management

TRC advocates a positive guidance and discipline policy with an emphasis on positive reinforcement, redirection, prevention and the development of self-discipline. Staff will work as a team to be consistent and base actions on an understanding of the participants needs. Participants should talk to staff if they are uncomfortable with any experiences/issues or need assistance during our programs. If participants do not speak up then staff may not know there are any issues.

We want to have fun but we need to make sure it’s safe for everybody. Participants need to follow directions, and listen to staff. If a behavior continues or staff is unable to diffuse a situation, guardians or parents may be called.  Consistent foul language, verbal or physical abuse will not be tolerated.

Parent/Guardian Feedback

Your feedback is important to us at TRC. If you have any questions, concerns, or comments please feel free to call at any time. If your participant is having difficulty at our program please notify us so that together we can form a solution. If no one is available please leave a message and your call will be returned.
